Human Trafficking
“Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of a person for the purpose of exploiting that person through slavery, forced labour, sexual servitude, debt bondage, organ removal or other forms of exploitation.” Human trafficking is the third fastest growing criminal activity, the first two are drugs and firearms.
Usually traffickers transport their victims with force, threats, blackmail or deception. These threats involve threats of deportation, murdering, steeling or money related. There are 21-30 million people in slavery today.
Human traffickers are forced to work with little or no pay. They are unable to turn and walk away. These people may be found brothels, factories, mines, farm fields, restaurants, construction sites and private homes and more. Usually the victims are tricked by traffickers or “pimps” into working for them. They usually lure the vulnerable and promise a good job with promising pay.
These victims cannot just walk away from the job or they will be killed, beaten or threatened. They are usually forced to take drugs and/or alcohol to cooperate. The victims are also told that escaping is useless, that they will be beaten, tortured and deported back to their country. Human trafficking is illegal, yet happens all over the world. Most of the time, the underlying cause of child trafficking, is poverty. Children are usually trafficked because their parents need money in order to survive.
Human trafficking occurs world-wide. It mainly occurs in third world countries like in Cambodia, Africa and Thailand. However, wealthy countries, such as Australia also are involved. Virtually no country is free from human trafficking, it happens all over the world. There are 2 main forms of human trafficking; forced labor and sexual exploitation.
There is a major difference between smuggling and trafficking humans. Smuggling is considered a crime against the state, allowing an illegal immigrant to come into our nation with their consent. Trafficking is a crime against a person, where the victim has no say or choice in where they are moved to or what happens to them; in short, they are slaves to their “owners.”
